Ecuador and Manchester United midfielder Antonio Valencia worked out in a gym on Wednesday as he recovers from an injured left ankle, but team officials say he remains in doubt for Saturday's Copa America match against Venezuela.

Valencia left Sunday's match against Paraguay with the injury. Ecuador team doctor Patricio Maldonado said X-rays did not show any structural damage to the ankle.

Valencia broke his left ankle in September playing for Manchester United in a Champions League match, underwent surgery and was out for five months.

''We've seen him in a better mood,'' Ecuador defender Geovanny Caisedo said. ''He's with us, and let's hope he can come back and play. He is a very important player.''

Valencia was not available for comment.

Team spokesman Victor Mestanza said Valencia was improving but was still in doubt for Saturday.
