John O'Shea has followed his teammate Wes Brown in leaving Manchester United to join Sunderland.

The 30-year-old Republic of Ireland defender, who can also play in midfield, signed a four-year contract Thursday.

O'Shea made 256 appearances for United after joining as a trainee. He collected five Premier League titles in his time with the club, as well as Champions League and FA Cup winners medals.

With the signing of Phil Jones from Blackburn and the emergence of the Da Silva twins, Rafael and Fabio, Sir Alex Ferguson has decided to let the versatile O'Shea leave.

He could well line up alongside Brown again next season, after the 31-year-old center back also completed his transfer to Sunderland on Thursday.
