SAO PAULO (AP) – A judge has issued an arrest warrant for former Brazil striker Edmundo for causing a car crash that killed three people in 1995.
Edmundo was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 1999. He lost an appeal, but legal procedures kept the conviction from officially taking effect until Rio de Janeiro judge Eduardo Carvalho de Figueiredo made Tuesday's night ruling.
Edmundo's lawyers say the time limit for the conviction had expired and will appeal again. He has not been arrested yet.
The player had been sentenced to more than four years in partial confinement.
The 40-year-old Edmundo played a few minutes in the 1998 World Cup final, when Brazil lost to host France.
A former Fiorentina and Napoli player, he has been a television commentator in Brazil for the past few years.
