Roberto Martinez will remain as manager of Wigan despite interest from English Premier League rival Aston Villa.

Villa is searching for a replacement for Gerard Houllier, who stepped down for health reasons this month, and asked Wigan chairman Dave Whelan for permission to speak to Martinez.

That request was granted but Villa says in a statement that the 37-year-old Spaniard ''has made the decision to honor his commitment to Wigan'' and hasn't opened talks with the club.

Whelan has offered a pay rise and a contract extension to Martinez, who has one year left on his deal at DW Stadium.
