Spain's Queen Sofia praised Monday the fruitful, admirable work of the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation, or AECID, while presiding over an event celebrating its 25th anniversary.

The queen inaugurated the "Cooperation IS Development" expo organized by AECID in collaboration with the municipality of Madrid.

She said she has witnessed how, during AECID's quarter of a century, its staff has worked with "effort and professionalism," and is an outstanding source of pride for the Spanish government.

At the same time, the queen gave assurances that in rushing to the aid of the Philippines, a nation that is a priority for Spanish cooperation, AECID will do everything possible to alleviate the disaster inflicted by the devastating SuperTyphoon Haiyan.

Also speaking at the event was Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, who noted that the queen is the most beloved representative of Spanish cooperation, and recalled the constant interest she takes in AECID's work.

The photo exhibit at Madrid's Conde Duque Cultural Center includes information about AECID's programs dealing with health, water, education, humanitarian acts and more. EFE
