Venezuelan Ambassador to Mexico Hugo Jose Garcia Hernandez has been asked to "clear up" the destruction of a Mexican-registered plane last week in Venezuela, the Foreign Relations Secretariat said.

Mexico is "requesting more information" about last Monday's incident in the wake of comments by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, the secretariat said in a statement.

The plane was being used to smuggle drugs, Maduro said during a televised appearance on Saturday.

"It's a plane we found full of drugs," Maduro said, adding that he received a request from the Mexican government seeking an explanation about the aircraft's destruction.

"I want the Mexican president to know that they were inquiring about a plane that was full of cocaine," Maduro said.

Venezuelan officials will provide the information requested by Mexico, Maduro said. EFE
