In addition, the Arizona Daily Independent is a blog, not a newspaper.
A Phoenix business owner who is vying for the Democratic nomination to run for governor of Arizona doctored a photo of himself to look like the man who appears in a Mexican beer advertisement.
The businessman, Fred DuVal, reportedly intended the photo as something of a joke in response to being referred to by the state GOP as “The World’s Most Uninteresting Man,” a play on words in the Dos Equis beer ad, whose pitchman is described as “The Most Interesting Man In the World.”
Several news outlets initially reported that DuVal had darkened his skin in the photo to "look Hispanic." But the DuVal campaign said on Tuesday that alterations were made, but that his skin was not darkened.
The DuVal campaign statement said: "To make Fred DuVal's photo accurately resemble Dos Equis' Most Interesting Man In The World, a beard was added to his picture, but his skin was not darkened."
DuVal said he simply wanted to show Republicans that he is a good sport, according to the Arizona Daily Independent.
The website said that the state GOP said “Duval digitally morphed himself to resemble the person pictured here, put the doctored image out on Twitter and hand-delivered a printed copy to the AZGOP. Painful attempts at humor, especially with racial overtones, usually backfire on candidates.”
DuVal continues to handle the matter with somewhat of a flip approach, according to published reports.
He issued a press release in which he said he was flattered by all the attention the GOP is giving him so long before the primaries and the election, which will be in 2014.
The current governor of Arizona is Jan Brewer, a Republican.
Some Latinos have assailed DuVal’s tactic, saying it strikes them as desperate and a cheap shot.
“As a Latino, I was not offended at all by the allusion to the Dos Equis commercial guy,” said Jose Borrajero of the Arizona Latino Republican Association. “It was a very stupid prank by someone who wants to be taken seriously as a gubernatorial candidate.”
