U.S. Ambassador Alan D. Solomont, who is nearing the end of his assignment in Spain, bid farewell Tuesday to the Spanish royal family.

Accompanied by his wife Susan, Solomont went to the Zarzuela Palace on Tuesday to finalize the diplomatic work in which he has been engaged since his arrival in Spain in January 2010, when he was appointed to the post by President Barack Obama.

According to Royal Household sources, Solomont met first with King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, and afterwards said goodbye to Crown Prince Felipe and his wife, Princess Letizia.

Solomont will soon be replaced by James Costos, a top executive of television channel HBO, whom Obama has chosen to lead the diplomatic mission in Madrid. EFE
