Spain's King Juan Carlos has sent a telegram to Argentine President Cristina Fernandez expressing his condolences to the families of those who died in the recent floods in the South American country, and stated his support for the Argentine people in this catastrophe, sources in the royal household told Efe.

The Argentines have organized a massive operation to aid the thousands left homeless by the "tsunami of rain," as it has been called, in the Buenos Aires city of La Plata and its surroundings, in which 57 people died.

Of the total number of fatalities, 51 died in La Plata as a consequence of last Tuesday night's torrential rain and flooding, while another six lost their lives in Buenos Aires some 60 kilometers (37 miles) away, where the storm front passed through several hours later. EFE
