Fishermen found an unmanned U.S. drone floating in the sea off the central Philippines, military spokesmen said Monday.

The drone was discovered on Sunday and the U.S. Embassy in Manila was informed, a Philippine navy spokesman said, without providing details on what the aircraft was doing near Masbate Island.

The fishermen handed the drone over to police in the town of San Jacinto and officers delivered it to the armed forces, GMA television reported.

The reconnaissance aircraft is red and white, with U.S. logos, and is a model BQM-74e that has the capacity to fly at an altitude of 12,200 meters (40,000 feet) with a maximum speed of Mach 0.86.

The United States and the Philippines have conducted military exercises regularly in the archipelago since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on Washington and New York. EFE
