The various stages in the life of Spain's King Juan Carlos are illustrated in a book of photographs published Thursday by Agencia Efe to mark the monarch's 75th birthday.
The book, "75 Years, 75 Photos," offers images painstakingly selected from the agency's 20,000 photographs of the king.
The book's first image is a photo of Juan Carlos with his father, Don Juan, and son, Crown Prince Felipe, that bears a signed dedication to Efe from the head of state.
Juan Carlos expresses his "appreciation and affection" for the work done "during so many years" by Efe, Spain's international news agency.
"Since the king has been king, there has always been a EFE reporter and photographer at his side," the agency's president, Jose Antonio Vera, noted in the text.
"In reality, the king of Spain is a gift for we who live in this country and who have had the occasion to be privileged witnesses of a transformation that astonished the world for years," Vera wrote, referring to the post-Franco restoration of democracy.
The collection begins with a 1938 image of Juan Carlos in the arms of his grandfathers, Alfonso XIII, and includes previously unpublished photos of the future king's childhood.
Also memorialized are Juan Carlos' coronation, his decisive intervention to stop an attempted coup in 1981 and other events embodying the way the king, in Vera's words, "contributed to putting Spain in a distinguished place in the concert of nations."
BBVA, La Caixa, Endesa, Gas Natural Fenosa, Iberdrola, Inditex, Mercadona, Repsol, Banco Santander and Telefonica collaborated with Agencia Efe in the publication of "75 Years, 75 Photos." EFE
