Spain's King Juan Carlos telephoned Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas while the latter was in Spain and the two men discussed the evolution of events in the Middle East.

Royal palace sources told Efe on Wednesday that the monarch did not receive Abbas at Zarzuela Palace on Tuesday as per medical advice to facilitate a rapid recovery from his recent hip replacement surgery.

But the king did call the Palestinian leader late in the afternoon to speak with him by phone, since a face-to-face meeting was not possible.

The head of the Palestinian National Authority, who is making a tour of several countries, met on Tuesday with Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, whom he thanked for Madrid's favorable vote in the U.N. General Assembly to make Palestine an observer state within the international body. EFE
