Spain's King Juan Carlos was received Friday in a solemn welcoming ceremony by Indian President Pranab Mukherjee as the second day of his official visit to India got underway.
Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh greeted the king upon his arrival at the majestic Presidential Palace, where he was received with a 21-gun salute and full military honors.
After his first contact with Mukherjee, who is giving a dinner Friday night in his honor, King Juan Carlos went to the Raj Ghat area south of the Red Fort and on the banks of the Yamuna River, where a quadrangular marble platform marks the place where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated after his assassination in 1948.
Barefoot like all other visitors as a sign of respect for this sacred place, the king placed a floral wreath in the colors of the Spanish flag on the marble and observed a minute of silence, before scattering petals on the pond at the center of the monument.
He then signed the mausoleum's book of honor and received a gift of several volumes and a bust of Gandhi.
From the mausoleum, the king proceeded to the official residence of the prime minister to meet with Singh and preside over the signing of several accords on bilateral economic cooperation in matters of taxation, audiovisual production, defense and transport. EFE
