Two U.S. citizens were wounded Friday when assailants fired dozens of shots at a vehicle with diplomatic plates on a road in central Mexico.
The two injured men arrived at Innovamed Hospital in Cuernavaca at 9:10 a.m. and "are being evaluated by the doctors," a spokeswoman for the institution told Efe.
The shooting took place at a spot on the Mexico City-Cuernavaca highway near the town of Fierro del Toro.
Federal police and troops were quickly deployed to the scene.
Most of the roughly 40 bullets that struck the Toyota SUV hit the right side of the vehicle, forensic technicians said.
Neither Mexican federal authorities or the Morelos state government have publicly commented on the attack, which happened en route to Cuernavaca. EFE
