The plane carrying presidential frontrunner Enrique Peña Nieto, of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, was forced to make an unscheduled landing in the Mexican city of Puebla due to mechanical problems, campaign coordinator Luis Videgaray said.
"I am reporting that due to a minor mechanical problem, the plane carrying @EPN to Tabasco had to land in Puebla, so he will not be able to make it to his rally in Tabasco," Videgaray said in a Twitter posting on Tuesday.
Peña Nieto and his staff "are perfectly fine, but they will regrettably not make it to Tabasco," Videgaray said.
"Regrettably, a minor mechanical problem did not let us make it to Tabasco. We are here at the Puebla airport!" Peña Nieto said in a posting.
Thousands of Peña Nieto's supporters had gathered at the main plaza Tuesday in the city of Cardenas to welcome the candidate to Tabasco, a state in southeastern Mexico, media reports said.
PRI campaign organizing official Miguel Osorio Chong confirmed that Peña Nieto had been forced to make the unscheduled stop in Puebla and would not make it to Cardenas. EFE
