A Kurdish journalist was killed this weekend by a mortar round fired by the Sunni militant group Islamic State while covering the fighting in Iraq, the Rudaw Web site reported Sunday.

Deniz Firat died while reporting on the fighting in Makhmour, a city south of Erbil, the capital of Iraq's Kurdistan region, for the Firat News Agency, or ANF.

She was hit in the chest by shrapnel from a mortar round while embedded with Kurdish Workers Party, or PKK, fighters who were trying to repulse an Islamic State attack in northern Iraq.

Firat worked for various Kurdish media outlets, covering the fighting in Syria's Kurdish region and in Iraq. EFE
