Costa Rican authorities on Tuesday arrested four Nicaraguans as suspects in the rape of a young U.S. tourist who said she had been attacked by several men.

The OIJ investigative agency said in a statement that police arrested four Nicaraguan men, three of them aged 27 and one 35, who are suspected of participating in the rape.

The suspects were placed at the time and location of the rape by several witnesses, and they were said to be the people who were last seen with the 19-year-old victim, according to the statement.

Authorities made the arrests while the suspects were working at a construction site in the northern town of San Carlos and the men will be put in a lineup before the witnesses.

The victim said that about midnight Sunday she was walking to her hotel when she was confronted by several men who took her by force to a house and raped her.

The young woman, whose identity was not revealed, is originally from Wisconsin and is part of a group of U.S. students who arrived in Costa Rica last week to get to know the country.
