Two gangmembers, both minors, were murdered in a prison near San Salvador, officials with the Salvadoran police and the Attorney General's Office said Thursday.

The bodies of the young men, who were not identified, were discovered Wednesday night in a cell in the prison at Tonacatepeque, some 16 kilometers (10 miles) north of San Salvador.

The sources said that both boys apparently were hanged and their bodies were found hanging in the cell, but authorities are investigating if they might have been murdered in some other way.

The two victims belonged to the Mara Salvatrucha gang, the officials said.

The Tonacatepeque prison houses more than 400 young offenders, most of them gangmembers. EFE
