Security forces arrested a man founded to be transporting nearly $2.3 million in cash, Guatemalan authorities said Monday.

Flavio Dimas Rojas Bracamonte was intercepted with the cash Sunday night while driving a van on the Atlantic coast highway.

The operation followed an investigation by prosecutors and the narcotics squad, Guatemala's PNC national police force said in a statement.

Rojas, who was on his way to Guatemala City at the time of the arrest, could not explain the source of the money found inside a hidden compartment in the rear of the vehicle.

He was taken into custody on suspicion of money laundering.

Officers also found a licensed firearm in the van, the PNC said.

Rojas began his journey in the northern province of Peten, authorities said. EFE
