Four women were shot and wounded in an apparent robbery attempt as they walked through a business district in downtown Mexico City, but no arrests have been made, police spokesmen said.

The shooting occurred around 6:50 p.m. Wednesday between Republica de Guatemala and Academia streets, Federal District Public Safety Secretariat spokesmen told Efe.

Two individuals riding on a motorcycle opened fire on the women and then fled, police said, citing eyewitness accounts.

The victims were transported to different Mexico City hospitals for treatment of abdominal, head and leg wounds, police said.

The shooting occurred on a street near the Zocalo, the capital's largest plaza and home to the National Palace.

The plaza is one of the most iconic areas in Mexico City and a big tourist attraction.

The area around the shooting scene is a busy business district full of shops and offices. EFE
