Authorities in the Turks and Caicos islands said Tuesday that they detained 114 undocumented Haitian migrants after intercepting a vessel as it passed through the island chain southeast of the Bahamas.
The 94 men and 20 women will be sent back to Haiti.
The boat was identified by a coastal radar station and intercepted Tuesday in the Caicos Bank, south of the main island of Providenciales, authorities said in a statement.
Turks and Caicos authorities have sought to dissuade Haitians from making the very dangerous trip, but to little avail. Last December at least 17 migrants died when their vessel overturned just off Providenciales. EFE
