Authorities in northwestern Mexico found seven people shot to death inside an SUV near the U.S. border, Sonora state police said.

The vehicle and bodies were discovered Wednesday on a hill in the municipality of Caborca, just across the border from Pima County, Arizona, police said in a statement.

A wounded man at the scene told police that he and the other seven people were intercepted by armed assailants while transporting illegal drugs.

The assailants opened fire on the SUV and its occupants and then fled, Sonora police said, without providing any information on the whereabouts of the drugs. EFE
