Five young men were killed and three others wounded when assailants opened fire at people playing soccer in a village on the outskirts of this capital, a Honduran police spokesperson told reporters Thursday.

The shooting took place Wednesday night in Santa Rosa, on the south side of Tegucigalpa.

A car pulled up to the soccer field and at least three armed men got out and started shooting, the spokesperson said, citing accounts from witnesses.

The three wounded survivors were taken to a hospital, according to police, who offered no information on their condition.

Authorities have no leads on the perpetrators or the motive behind the multiple-murder, the police spokesperson said.

Honduras is one of the most dangerous countries in the world.

The Central American nation suffered 85.5 homicides for every 100,000 residents in 2012, compared with a global median rate of 8.8 murders per 100,000, the Violence Observatory at the National Autonomous University said in a study released about a year ago. EFE
