Official unemployment in Spain fell by 1,949 last month to 4.81 million, the first drop in February of any year since 2007, the Employment and Social Security Ministry said Tuesday.
The number of jobless people registered at government employment offices was down 227,736 last month compared with February 2013.
At the same time, Social Security enrolled an additional 61,557 people in February over the same month last year, raising the total to 16.21 million people.
This is the first year-on-year increase since May 2008, according to figures published Tuesday by the ministry.
Analysts use enrollment in Social Security as a proxy for the level of formal employment.
Unemployment rose last month in agriculture and among first-time job-seekers, while it declined in manufacturing, construction and services.
Among foreigners, joblessness increased by 6,526 people to 576,162, of whom 198,309 come from member countries of the European Union.
The ministry documented 1.09 million new hires last month, down 168,361 from January, but an increase of 141,035 over February 2013. EFE
