A brawl among inmates at the Itamaraca prison in the northeastern Brazilian state of Pernambuco left two dead and eight injured, authorities said Thursday.
After the fight, the bodies of two inmates were taken to a first aid center in Igarassu, some 30 kilometers (19 miles) from Recife, the state capital, a prisons service spokeswoman told Efe.
Eight other prisoners were treated for slight injuries, she said.
The prisons service said that the confrontation was confined to a single cellblock and that prison authorities never lost control of the facility or the situation.
Media outlets said that during the course of the morning it was possible to hear gunfire coming from inside the prison and several prisoners were seen occupying the building's roof.
The Brazilian government last month acknowledged the "dramatic" situation in the country's prisons, especially in the northeastern state of Maranhao, where more than 60 prisoners have died since January 2013 in a wave of violence. EFE
