A police officer was killed Tuesday and another four were wounded in a gunfight with a criminal gang in the central Honduran town of San Luis, the government said.
The spokesman for the Security Ministry, Julian Hernandez, said the police were attacked while taking part in an operation tracking down members of the Espinoza gang, which was terrorizing several communities in the San Luis area.
The official did not say whether the Espinoza gang had suffered any casualties.
The wounded cops were rescued by a Honduran air force helicopter that flew them to a hospital in Tegucigalpa.
Violence in Honduras leaves an average of 20 fatalities daily, according to human rights organizations. EFE
