A driver who worked for the Guatemalan Attorney General's Office was gunned down Monday in a poor neighborhood of this capital, authorities said.

Anibal Maldonado, 35, was shot by unknown assailants as he was standing outside the front door of his home in the Villalobos district, a police spokesman said.

"This person was with friends, when two armed men approached, took out their guns and shot him. It was a direct attack," the spokesman said.

Maldonado had not reported receiving any threats, authorities said.

Guatemala suffers an average of 16 homicides per day, making it one of the most violent nations in Latin America. EFE
