Four people were arrested Tuesday after a woman hurled an unidentified white powder into the face of Vice President Roxana Baldetti, Guatemala's interior minister said.

The woman who carried out the attack and another female were arrested "red-handed," while two male accomplices were apprehended in a waiting car, Mauricio Lopez Bonilla told reporters.

The incident took place at the Miguel Angel Asturias National Theater, where Baldetti accompanied President Otto Perez Molina to the presentation of his annual state of the nation address.

The arrested people were identified as Daira Cristal Coton Florian, who threw the unknown substance into Baldetti's face, Geraldine del Cid, Anibal Rodriguez and Jose Miguel Hernandez.

It has not yet been determined what the substance was that was thrown into the face of the VP, who was transported to a hospital, Lopez Bonilla said.

He added that the attackers were also found to have fireworks and hoods inside the vehicle.

The minister said that one of the women arrested claimed that Carlos del Leon, with the University Students Association, was the person who organized the attack.

One of the doctors attending the vice president, Marcos Flores, told reporters that Baldetti arrived at the hospital with breathing problems and with severe conjunctivitis but that her condition was stable. EFE
