A woman and her newborn son were killed when a truck flipped over on a highway in a remote region of northern Nicaragua, police said Sunday, adding that 17 people were injured in the accident.

The accident occurred Friday night in Tasba Bail, an isolated area outside the city of Waspam, which is in the Atlantico Norte Autonomous Region, or RAAN, the poorest and least developed part of Nicaragua.

The dead woman has been identified as 41-year-old Juana Alarcon Lancineth, whose 2-month-old baby also died in the accident, RAAN police chief Yuri Valle told the La Prensa newspaper.

The accident was caused by the truck's poor mechanical condition and overloading.

The truck was designed to haul cargo, not people, police said.

Trucks are regularly used to get around in the region because of the lack of public transporation in the RAAN, where roads are in poor condition, media reports said. EFE
