Five alleged criminals died Wednesday in a shootout with security forces in Puerto Peñasco, in the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora, government officials said.

"So far, five individuals lost their lives in a confrontation with federal forces," said Sonora prosecutor Carlos Navarro Sugich on Twitter.

The state Attorney General's Office said in a communique that three men died at the scene of the shootout, outside a hotel in Puerto Peñasco, while two others lost their lives when the vehicle they were driving flipped over.

The vehicle crashed into a wall and burst into flames, the AG's Office said, adding that the gunfight erupted during an operation by federal police and navy personnel.

The AG's Office said that so far the identities of the presumed criminals are not known, adding that security will be strengthened in the region. EFE
