The overhaul of the Federal Police has started, with the law enforcement agency being reorganized into five regional operations commands to fight crime more effectively in Mexico, the National Security Comission said.

The federal law enforcement agency will have northwestern, northeastern, central, western and southeastern commands, National Security Commissioner Manuel Mondragon said.

The reorganization was rolled out on Wednesday with the creation of the western command, Mondragon said.

The regional commands will be responsible for analyzing the public safety situation in the states they cover in an effort to fight crime with "operational effectiveness, immediacy and transparency," the commissioner said.

The reorganization will allow the Federal Police to have a sharper focus, Mondragon said in a statement.

The regional commands will report to the Federal Police commissioner and coordinate their operations with federal prosecutors, the army, marine corps, state prosecutors and state police commanders, Mondragon said. EFE
