Samsung Electronics Co Ltd announced Wednesday that the world's first smartphone with a curved screen will go on sale this week in South Korea.

The Galaxy Round has an 11.4-centimeter (5.7-inch) screen with a slight horizontal curve.

Though it is the same length, the new device weighs less than Samsung's recently launched Galaxy Note 3.

The Galaxy Round, which is equipped with front-and-rear-facing cameras and runs Android's Jelly Bean operating system, will sell through SK Telecom Co Ltd for 1.09 million won ($1,000).

Samsung did not mention any plans to market the phone outside South Korea.

The South Korean tech giant's local rival, LG Electronics, said earlier this week that it is ready to begin mass production of what it describes as the world's first flexible plastic light-emitting diode, or OLED, panels, for smartphones. EFE
