The U.S. Capitol was briefly shut down Thursday after gunfire was heard in the vicinity and at least one person was wounded.

Preliminary accounts indicate that the incident began on Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House and involved a woman in a car.

The woman tried to get through a White House security barrier and, as a result, the Secret Service pursued her until they caught up with her near the Capitol and the shots were heard.

Also in the suspect's vehicle was a minor, according to CNN, citing unnamed intelligence sources.

ABC reported that the suspect was shot by authorities and died at the scene, while other outlets reported that she was wounded and in custody.

A Capitol police officer was wounded.

President Barack Obama was informed of the incident and his team is monitoring the situation, the White House said. EFE
