Dozens of suspected Al Qaeda members attacked an army base Monday in southeastern Yemen, killing at least five soldiers, officials said.
The number of wounded is not known and casualty figures could rise, doctors told Efe.
The terrorists mounted a sustained attack on the base and the army is surrounding the facility in an effort to prevent the attackers from escaping.
The terrorists attacked the base in Khalaf, a neighborhood in the eastern part of Al Mukalla, the capital of Hadhramaut, in the morning, eyewitnesses told Efe.
The attackers were wearing army uniforms and used car bombs and RPGs to storm the base, taking control of the military facility, a government official said.
"We are hiding at home, we can't even go near the windows," a resident of a neighborhood near the base said. EFE
