Mexican actress Itati Cantoral is starting a new phase in her artistic career as the narrator of a true crime television series.

"It's been a marvelous and fun experience because I don't narrate as Itati Cantoral but as a character who is an homage to all the villains I've played in my career," the actress told Efe on Tuesday about her new role as narrator for the series "Pasiones Peligrosas," which will air on Sept. 30 on Discovery en Español.

The role of villain is not foreign to this actress, who over her long career has played bad women such as Soraya Montenegro in "Maria la del Barrio."

The Discovery series presents the tortuous relationships that can end up in real-life crimes of passion, but which the character of the narrator seeks to make less dramatic.

"For me, this work as a narrator ... is a big opportunity because it will allow me to reach the large U.S. Hispanic audience as well as my public in Mexico," she said.

Cantoral, the daughter of singer-songwriter Roberto Cantoral, also confirmed to Efe that she will play the late singer Jenni Rivera in a new series.

"I'm going to try to do honor to one who deserves honor. I'm researching Jenni's life in depth and I feel very happy to play an unbreakable woman," she said.

Cantoral counted Jenni Rivera as a friend.

Because of that respect, she said, bringing her to life on TV is a great challenge, because she doesn't want to be just a "caricature" of the popular Mexican-American singer and thus is "completely committed" to the project.

Documentary images will be used in the series, including Rivera's concerts, and even the last one she gave in Mexico before losing her life in a plane crash in December 2012. EFE
