Remains found in the northwestern Panamanian province of Bocas del Toro have been identified as those of a U.S. woman who disappeared during a visit to the Central American country in 2011, a prosecutor said here Wednesday.
A comparison with DNA samples from the missing woman's family revealed that the skull and bones discovered last week belong to Yvonne Lee Baldelli, Vielka Broce told a press conference in Panama City.
Authorities have yet to determine the cause of death, Broce said.
The 42-year-old California woman was last seen alive in November 2011 on the small island of Isla Carenero.
She was in the company of boyfriend Brian Brimager, who has been indicted in the United States for Baldelli's murder.
Panamanian authorities will turn to the question of possible charges against Brimager once medical examiners reach a conclusion on the cause of death, Broce said.
Baldelli's remains were discovered inside a green, military-type bag spotted by fishermen on Isla Carenero. EFE
