One soldier was killed and four others wounded when a bomb was detonated as they were patrolling a rural area in the southern province of Nariño, the Colombian military said Friday.

The blast occurred Thursday in El Playon, a village near the Pacific port of Tumaco.

Pvt. Yorman Restrepo Ortiz died in the explosion, while two other privates, a corporal and a lieutenant were injured, the military said.

The army blamed the attack on the Daniel Aldana column of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, the Andean nation's largest rebel group.

Colombia's government and the FARC have been engaged in peace talks since last November. President Juan Manuel Santos rejected the guerrillas' proposal for a mutual suspension of hostilities during the negotiations. EFE
