A member of Argentina's SIDE intelligence service was killed in an exchange of gunfire after police burst into his home to search for illegal drugs, media outlets said Wednesday.

The Falcon Group, an elite police counter-narcotics unit, had a judge's authorization for the raid in the capital suburb of La Reja, Clarin newspaper said.

Police identified the dead man as a drug trafficker known by the nickname El Lauchon and said they found illegal substances inside the residence.

But a spokesperson for the family told TN television that the man killed in the incident was a 40-year veteran of SIDE who had been directing a drug investigation. EFE
