Fourteen people were killed and 31 others injured Friday in a suicide attack on a Shi'ite Muslim mosque in Baghdad, Iraqi police sources told Efe.

The bomber entered the Ali Basha mosque and detonated explosives taped to his body.

Many of the wounded are in critical condition and the death toll looks likely to rise, the sources said.

Fearing additional attacks, security forces cordoned off the mosque.

One person was killed and 17 hurt Friday in a car-bomb strike in Al Kut, south of the capital, the police sources said.

Separately, Iraqi government forces killed four suspected al-Qaeda members and captured four others in the western province of Al-Anbar, near the Syrian border.

Politically motivated violence resulted in 761 deaths in Iraq last month, according to the U.N. mission in Baghdad, including 207 members of the security forces. EFE
