Venezuelan authorities on Monday formally charged a man with beating his 1-year-old daughter to death when she would not stop crying and for threatening and attacking his spouse "to prevent her from reporting him."

Christian Paredes, 28, has been under arrest since May 5, a day after "he became upset because his daughter was crying persistently" and beat her causing "several fractures of the head," the Attorney General's Office announced in a communique.

The little girl's mother immediately took her to a clinic but she "arrived without vital signs," said the AG's office, noting that the incident occurred in a peasant settlement in the southeastern state of Bolivar.

In addition to murder, Paredes stands accused of "aggravated physical violence and threats against the mother of the ... victim." EFE
