Seven people were arrested when police found cocaine hidden Sunday in secret compartments in three vehicles on a road in a Guatemalan town near the border with Mexico, a National Civilian Police, or PNC, spokesman said.

"As of now, we have found about 14 kilos of cocaine," the PNC spokesman said.

The drug seizure was made in Tecun Uman, a border town in San Marcos province.

Officers also seized firearms, ammunition and cell phones that were in the vehicles, one of which is armored, the PNC spokesman said.

The police officers were conducting a "routine operation" to inspect vehicles in the area, the PNC spokesman said.

The seven suspects - five men, a woman and a minor - were arrested and handed over to judicial officials.

Police have stepped up patrols in western and southwestern Guatemala following the killings last Thursday of eight PNC officers at a station in the city of Salcaja that was blamed on drug traffickers. EFE
