A federal corrections officer was fatally shot while driving on the Jose de Diego expressway, authorities in Puerto Rico said Wednesday.
Lt. Osvaldo Alvaroti, an investigative officer at Metropolitan Detention Center Guaynabo in suburban San Juan, was killed shortly before midnight Tuesday, federal prosecutor Lorna Colon said.
Because the victim was a federal officer, the FBI office in San Juan will investigate the murder, she said.
Authorities have no information on who may have killed Alvaroti, Colon said.
MDC Guaynabo is classified by the Federal Bureau of Prisons as an administrative facility, and holds both male and female inmates.
"Administrative facilities are institutions with special missions, such as the detention of pretrial offenders; the treatment of inmates with serious or chronic medical problems; or the containment of extremely dangerous, violent, or escape-prone inmates," the Bureau says on its Web site. EFE
