(Updates with police information about false alarm)

Police said a report about an individual carrying a long rifle and wearing body armor on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was a false alarm.

Police in Cambridge, Massachusetts, conducted an unsuccessful search for the alleged gunman at the prestigious university, where students were instructed to remain indoors while the threat was being investigated.

Police received a report early Saturday about an armed man inside one of MIT's buildings, but they did not find anyone who met the description given and then confirmed that there was no cause for alarm on campus.

On Saturday morning, the university issued an emergency alert warning students to take shelter and stay far away from the Main Group Building, where the individual was reportedly seen.

MIT also urged people to report "suspicious activity" to the campus police.

One of the top universities in the United States, MIT is known for its programs in the areas of science, engineering and economics.
