More than 20 people died in a traffic accident near the Haitian town of Villard when the truck they were riding in swerved and plunged into a canal running alongside the highway, the online daily Haiti Press Network reported.

According to hospital officials cited by the daily, 20 bodies have been found up to now, though the death toll could climb to as many as 25, since there are a large number of injured.

The truck was coming from Benait in the southeastern part of the country on its way to Anse-a Foleur in the northeast, when it skidded off the highway, possibly because it was speeding. EFE
