A 9-year-old girl is in critical condition after being raped by three men in the eastern province of Punjab, Pakistan's Express Tribune newspaper said Friday.

Three women and a man snatched the girl on Wednesday outside her family's home in the southern Punjab town of Manzoorabad and took her to a nearby encampment, where she was raped by three assailants, police said.

The girl's mother told police she later found her daughter outside their home, bloody and semiconscious.

When the mother set out for the local police precinct to report the crime, she was intercepted by one of the rapists, who threatened to kill her if she said anything.

The mother returned to her home, but decided to file a report anyway and police formed a squad to pursue the suspects, though none has been arrested yet.

Doctors at a hospital in Lahore confirmed the sexual assault and described the girl's condition as critical, noting that she suffered internal injuries and substantial blood loss.

More than 2,700 rapes took place in the 15 districts of southern Punjab during the first 11 months of 2012, according to a recent report from the Awaz Foundation. EFE
