Five people died Wednesday when they were run over by a soft drink delivery truck on a highway in eastern Guatemala, emergency personnel said.

A spokesman for the Voluntary Firefighters told reporters that the victims - two women and three girls - were walking along the side of the highway in the town of Jalapa, some 150 kilometers (93 miles) east of the capital, when the truck hit them.

"Apparently, the truck driver ... lost control of his brakes and could not avoid the women who were walking along the shoulder of the road," the spokesman said.

A 12-year-old girl who was also in the group survived the accident and was taken to a nearby medical center.

According to the National Civil Police report on the accident, the truck driver and his assistant fled the scene of the accident. EFE
