At least 11 children died Monday in China when the van they were riding in went off the road into a pond, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

Four other children were injured in the accident, which occurred in a rural part of the eastern province of Jiangxi, a city official told the news agency.

The driver of the vehicle, in which a teacher was also riding, was arrested so that he can be questioned as part of the authorities' investigation of the crash, the official said.

Three of the children died at the scene, while the other eight died at a local hospital, where they were taken along with the injured.

The deaths of 18 school-age children in the head-on crash of an overloaded school van and a truck in November 2011 in the northwestern province of Gansu caused a massive public outcry in China.

After that accident, Prime Minister Wen Jiabao ordered better safety inspections of those vehicles and the passage of laws introducing certain safety standards, but that move does not appear to have prevented all similar accidents, especially in rural areas. EFE
