Thirteen workers died and one is in critical condition after the partial collapse of a building under construction in Lonikand, a police official in that village in western India told Efe on Wednesday.

The accident occurred on Tuesday when a cement portion of the fourth floor of the building collapsed.

The building is being built to house an "ayurveda" (traditional Indian medicine) training facility.

Local media said that, in addition to the 13 workers who died and the one who was seriously injured, several workers remain trapped in the rubble.

The police source contacted by Efe early Wednesday morning from New Delhi said, however, that rescue operations had concluded and that the final tally in the accident was 13 deaths and 1 person injured.

Building collapses are regular occurrences in India due to the poor quality of the materials and the fact that structures are often built without receiving the required permits from the authorities. EFE
