The Libyan national government's head of security in Benghazi was killed, officials in that eastern city told Efe on Wednesday.

Faray al Darsi was shot Tuesday night in front of his home in the city's Al Sabri neighborhood and died later at a hospital.

Several assailants took part in the attack, the officials said.

The past three months have seen a number of high-ranking security personnel gunned down in Benghazi, where the country's fledgling government is struggling to impose its authority and restore order.

Benghazi, Libya's second city, was the birthplace of the revolt that led to the toppling and death of long-time Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi in October 2011. EFE
