Haiti's National Police are investigating one of their own for the weekend shooting death of a university student at the School of Law and Social Sciences in Port-au-Prince, local media reported Monday.
Damael d'Haiti, 24, died Saturday of a gunshot wound during a university party and after students accused a police officer of the killing, the latter was taken to the Judicial Police headquarters for questioning, spokesman Frantz Lerebours said.
He added that, according to the initial investigation, "his behavior and the evidence" are working against the officer, but authorities still do not have the full picture surrounding the incident.
Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe issued a communique "energetically" condemning the murder and assured the university community that measures had been taken "so that this hateful crime will not remain unpunished."
Lamothe expressed his solidarity with the victim's family and reiterated his firm determination to combat impunity for crimes. EFE
